SAFERIB I

1st WORKSHOP ON RADIOPROTECTION SAFETY ISSUES

RELATED TO RIB FACILITIES

CERN, 30 October - 1 November 2002

Dear Colleagues,

Developing optimized techniques for intense radioactive ion beams is a forefront topic of extensive efforts at various existing or upcoming facilities in Europe as well as in the US and Japan. Typically the envisaged increase of the ion beam intensities - intended to reach several orders of magnitude compared to presently existing facilities - goes along with a drastic increase of the radioactive inventory in the production target area and other radioprotection-related problems.

New technical challenges arise that will in most cases also critically affect approval procedures of new or upgraded institutions. Although a first attempt to launch a European network on safety issues connected to the production targets of next-generation RIB facilities was not approved for EU funding last year, we feel that these safety issues will increasingly move into the focus at all places aiming at building or upgrading RIB facilities. Therefore we renew our efforts and announce a workshop covering the main radioprotection-related safety issues connected to RIB facilities or comparable production targets.

We attribute two main goals to this workshop: First to offer a platform for colleagues working on similar problems to discus and exchange novel ideas and encourage synergy effects. And secondly we hope that this meeting can initiate a renewed attempt of creating a European network proposing coordinated R & D efforts within the 6th EU framework. The MAIN TOPICS of the workshop are envisaged as follows:

Please feel free to suggest additions and modifications to this list.

We encourage colleagues from all institutions or research groups involved or interested in the above mentioned topics to join the hereby announced workshop.

ACCOMMODATION

Reservations should be made individually well in advance at the CERN hostel (foyer@cern.ch).
