ABSTRACT

Neutron Production at the GSI Fragment Separator

G. Fehrenbacher, J.G. Festag, F. Gutermuth, T. Radon, K. Gunzert, D. Schardt
GSI, Darmstadt, Germany

High-intensity and high-energy beams of heavy ions as they are needed for the production of exotic nuclei in an in-flight facility abundantly generate energetic neutrons.

In this contribution an overview over the radiation fields and the dose rate levels inside and outside the radiation shielding is given, based on the TLD area monitoring programme at the GSI fragment separator. In addition, the expected problems associated with the shielding of the future Super-Fragment separator at GSI will be sketched. First results will be presented for the neutron source strength from a completely stopped U-beam as measured at GSI.
