ISAC is currently the most intense source of radioactive ion beams in the world. Up to 100 microamperes of 500 MeV protons are used to bombard the production targets that can yield ion beams of intensity up to 1011 s-1. In this paper we describe the radiation safety aspects of the design of the facility as well as some operational experience and plans for the future. We briefly discuss the tools used to estimate shielding and activation, and the methods for servicing the target and ion source components and for controlling the spread of contamination. The program for obtaining regulatory approval to bombard actinide targets is also briefly outlined.
